The Story
Guys and Dolls concerns the loves and lives of the various
Damon Runyon characters drawn from Broadway in the 1930's and 1940's.
It revolves round a gambling game and the reforming influences of
the Save a Soul Mission.
There are two love stories and the first involves the proprietor
of “The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York,”
Nathan Detroit. He is devoted to Miss Adelaide who is a night club
singer. They have been engaged for 14 years but the wedding
date has always been postponed because of Nathan's sudden urgency
to dash off to the Saratoga Racetrack or to superintend some crap
game.
The other love story concerns Sky Masterson, a high rolling gambler
and Sarah Brown, head of the run down Save a Soul Mission.
She makes it her mission to save Sky from himself.
Needless to say, in spite of the complications of the plot, all
ends happily and each guy gets his doll (or should it be that each
doll gets her guy?).
