A SHORT HISTORY.

Hawick Amateur Operatic Society  was founded in 1910. The founder members included Willie and John Campbell, W.  P. Gaylor, Adam Leithhead and Helen Charters who was the mother of the present  producer Jean Wintrope. The first production "H.M.S. Pinafore" was staged in the  'New Theatre' in Croft Road in the spring of 1911. The Musical Director for the  production was Mr. Robert Rimmer the conductor of the Hawick Saxhorn Band. His wife took the female leading role of 'Josephine'. Jeans mother, Helen Charters  appeared as one of the 'sisters, cousins and aunts' in the chorus. Jeans father joined the society after the Great War. Jeans sister Nan became assistant pianist and eventually played full time serving the society for many years.  Hawick audiences are well aware of the many roles Jean has played on the amateur stage before becoming a producer for Hawick and other Border Societies. Hawick  Amateur Operatic Society is looking forward to its centenary in 2010.
